The 'classic' challenge
Number 2 - February 2013.
Tim was given a copy of (the magnificent) 'Blue Lines' - by Massive Attack.
Check his thoughts here: The guv's thoughts
I received 'Im Wide Awake, It's Morning' by Bright Eyes.
This was the one I knew would arrive.
In all honesty I was dreading it as much as I was intrigued.
I know Tim loves this album. (It seems to be up there with his two children in terms of how he fondly talks about it).
Tim, like myself and several of my friends, place a high value on music.
To others who don't have these values it is easy to scoff at how much these albums can mean to us.
Just a C.D isn't it?
So, yes Tim, I will tread lightly but we have agreed to be honest with our reviews so I'm hoping I'll hear something I'll like....
.
I did. *Wipes sweat from brow*
The production is bouncy and pleasing to my ears. Within minutes I was reminded of the Violent Femmes whom I have loved for many years.
Some Lambchop-like sliding geetars and an Eels-ish view on the world.
Easy to see why this album is so treasured by the guv'nor.
'Poison Oak' - album highlight for me.
Brilliant.
Big swell with a whirring organ...fine stuff.
Not a song that could be written for the sake of it.
'Lua' is a total gem of a song; restrained and kept neat and story led.
'Another Travelin' Song'. I'm deliberately avoiding the
Dy**n comparisons but this chap Oberst can write a good stomper.
Stinkers? a couple of (lyrical) moments that made me wince.
A spot too discordant at times - overly shaky voice on 'train under water'?
He does this a far bit to be honest - takes a bit of getting used to...
Nothing worth getting your panties in a bunch though.
A focused, well written and ultimately enjoyable album.
Two for two.
7 out of 10.
Looking forward to the next recommendation for March.
Stay tuned.
