Back in the late 80s and early 90s myself and good pals used to spend a fair bit of time in Manchester. A few lucky types were studying up there and we made some firm friends along the way. It was that time when the NME were bumping it up. We had an absolute blast to be honest. Hacienda & Konspiracy, live bands, touring the sites, obscure French films at the Cornerhouse, Smiths song reference locations, you know the sort of thing.
I cringe when I think of those posed photo opportunities draped in raincoats on Joy division-y bridge scenes. (Actually It makes me laugh and smile more).
We all (I think) have a particular time when we are shaped more than any other. A golden era. This was it for me. Alongside 1988 when I first met Pia and 1991 when I was in Australia. Best years of my life (so far anyway). I'm intending to have a few more.
My record collection grew considerably every time I went oop north.
One of the bands who meant a lot to me then (still do infact) were Yargo.
Searched out all the C.Ds, vinyl and promos that were available. (Plucked up courage at one point to shimmy into Eastern Bloc but was actively ignored by the hipsters behind the counter). I even started to wear a skull cap. (This was not a good look for me let's face it)
Anyway my good friend and guide Sarah went to see them play live. March 1990; Manchester international 2.
I still remember how amazed I was that night; what a superb band.
To top it all they released it as a live album and it is one of my treasured items.
I'm no reviewer but if you do stumble across a copy of 'Bodybeat' or 'Communication' snap them up. Top albums.
Thanks Basil, Phil, Paddy & Tony. You made a difference to this awkward youth!
Most of all thanks Sarah; would never have heard of them without you. Happy memories.
Can't find too much live footage but this will probably give you an idea.
I still have that skullcap mind…
